A Lost Canuck in China

It’s crazy how time seems to pass by faster and faster as you get older, and other here it seems to go that much quicker. I can’t believe its almost 3 years since I’ve been in China, 2 since I met Sadie. The other day I was thinking about how I met my girlfriend Sadie here in Shanghai. It couldn’t have happened anywhere but here.

It all started when a mutual friend of ours was having a BBQ a couple years back. Sadie was in town from Taiwan, on the Shanghai leg of her China tour. She was in town for about a week and the entire time our friend was calling out to meet her. I was totally up for meeting but that week had been a busy one and there just wasn’t anyway I could meet up until the very last day of Sadie’s stay in Shanghai. And even then, it didn’t look like we’d meet up.

The day of the BBQ, me and Mitch experienced our first Typhoon. Up until that day, the word typhoon, in my vocabulary, meant the tag team partner of Earthquake in the WWF team ‘The natural disasters’. But that day we found out what a real Typhoon felt like. The whole day, actually the whole weekend, it was raining heavily and the wind never let up. The rain was like Forrest Gump’s ’sideways rain’. We saw building materials ripping off of buildings and debris littering the streets that were more like rivers at that point. Surely the BBQ was off. But our friend called and asked if we were gonna make it.

Of course we weren’t I thought. I’m not leaving my apartment to get into this mess. But I told her we’d try to find a cab. So out we ventured. My guess was that after 10 minutes we’d realize the cabs weren’t running but as we stepped out onto the river/street a cabbie pulled up. When we stepped in the cab was as flooded and the road it was driving on. Sitting inside the cab we were at least ankle deep in water. We were in an unknown part of town heading to an unknown apartment compound.

Once we got to the compound, we trekked twice back and forth in full typhoon trying to find her apartment. Finally we found the ground level apartment and got some immediate respite. We walked in and thats when I saw her. Sadie was on the phone, looking too busy and cool to talk to us, so I figured forget it and started chatting up the other guests.

Later on in the night, I was provided an ‘in’, our mutual friend introduced us but I still was sold. After more talking and eating and drinking, I found out she wasn’t pretentious and cold as I thought, I actually like this girl. And then… Mitch whose allergic to peanuts… somehow ate some peanuts. Just as I’m making some headway with this girl, Mitch is slowly descending into an anaphylactic reaction. He’s throwing up in the flooded bathroom, while I’m getting along famously with Sadie. Finally, what I knew was gonna happen, happened. We had to go, if not to the hospital at least home where we had some allergy meds/injections we could use in a pinch. I weighed the options for much longer than a normal human would… unless that human was a man. Go home and avert allergy disaster or stick around and chat up a chick I just met and potentially lose a friend to the death nut. My brain over powering the rest of my body we decided to get out of Dodge.

Leaving, I secretly hoped that Sadie’s flight the next day would be canceled due to the Typhoon and that she would have to stay. If that happened I would make sure there would be no peanuts within a mile radius of my buddy. But that never happened. We went home and instead of hanging out with a girl that I was really into, I had to potentially jab my pal in the butt with a needle, literally you jackasses.
